You feel overwhelmed. You feel like there is nothing you can do about the stress in your life. The children won’t stop arguing. The bills are piling up. You can’t finish the laundry. Will it ever end?

Stress management, now.

You wish there were more hours in the day, but there isn’t. This makes you feel like your life is out of control. You don’t feel like there is anytime for fun in your life.

After a while, you may start feeling tired and resentful. It seems like everyone else is having fun, why aren’t you? This is when it’s time to take inventory of your life. You really are driving the bus, here. Back up, and take a look at how you got here.

You actually are in control of your life. This means you can stop saying yes when you mean no.

Here are 6 tips that will help you reduce stress and feel better:

  1. Connect with others. Friendships are important. As you get older it’s easy to let them slip away. Work, family and your house tend to take priority. After a while, friends get lower and lower on the list. Spending quality time with friends, will help make you feel better. It can also decrease anxiety and depression. Keep in mind a good friendship, involves and speaker and a listener. This doesn’t mean that all your problems will go away, but you feel feel more hopeful.
  2. Accept there are things you can’t control. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is let go. This doesn’t make you a loser, this can be a lesson learned. The more you hold on, the more stressed out you will become. This will affect your mood, this may even cause you to become obsessed.
  3. Identify the sources of stress in your life. Do you blame your stress on other people in your life, such as work and family? You need to accept responsibility for the role you plan in the stress in your life. Are you always late with your deadlines at work? This might be because you procrastinate too much. If that’s the case, then you need to look at why. Are you accepting too much responsibility? Do you delegate tasks at work and at home? Do you feel like nobody else can do things the way you do?
  4. Make time for fun and relaxation. This means you need to schedule fun and relaxation on your calendar. You don’t have to finish all of your errands in a day. Fun can be spending time with your partner laughing. Watch a funny movie or video. Go to a yoga class, when you are supposed to be at church. Whatever it is, make sure it is fun and relaxing to you.
  5. Talk about how you feel. This may feel scary. Maybe, you have been put down in the past when you talk about your feelings. This can make people feel uncomfortable. When you talk about your feelings, this can help decrease stress. This doesn’t necessarily change the situation, but it will help you feel better. People that care about you will allow you to do this. It will also help give people a better understanding about you.
  6. Start to relieve stress in the moment. You’ve had an argument with your spouse or best friend. You may feel like yelling, or your already have. One of the fastest ways to reduce stress is to take a deep breath. Use your senses: what do you see, taste or hear? Refocus your attention. Look at a photo or go for a walk. Listen to your favorite song, get a drink of water or chew some gum.

Stress management isn’t something you practice once in a while. It’s something you practice daily. Start with one of these and see how you feel. You can also add some of your own. Stress doesn’t have to take over your life. You can regain control over your life again.

You may feel like you will get less done, but in the long run you will be more productive. Most importantly, you will feel better. This will decrease your chances of becoming depressed or ending up with some type of an anxiety disorder.
