More and more people are reporting feeling stressed out. It’s important that you keep your stress level down. If you don’t it will lead to burn out. This is when you don’t enjoy the life that you have, and you feel overwhelmed. It can also feel like things keep getting worse.

You want to start by appreciating the small things. Like a roof over your head and food on the table. It may sound obvious, but it’s easy to get caught up in the rat race and forget what is truly important.

You may be thinking you have so much on your plate, how is it even possible? If you feel this way, you aren’t alone. Start with the small stuff. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress. You can add a few more steps into your day by parking further away from the office building that you work at, or when you go to the grocery store. Small steps lead to big steps. Get up 10 minutes early and do some yoga. Take the dog for a walk, or play outside with your children.

Reducing stress isn’t only good for your emotional and physical health, it is also good for your relationship.

  1. It will help you be more compassionate in your relationshipWhen you are always busy or in a hurry, because you are stressed out. It’s easy to not notice when your partner is feeling down. You may feel that their problems are small, compared to yours. But the truth is, this is  your partner and no matter what they are going through you need to be empathetic and understanding. This will help create a relationship where your partner feels like you have their back.
  2. You will sleep better and feel more rested. When you are tired you are more likely to feel irritable. This can come out on the person closest to you. You are more likely to snap at your partner for no reason. This can create unnecessary tension in the relationship. Make sure to make sleep a priority in your life. Get at least eight hours a night.
  3. You will enjoy playtime with your partner. When was the last time you took the day off, and just enjoyed being with your partner. Think back to when the relationship was new. You always made time to play with your partner. Not only was this good for you, it was good for the relationship. It’s alright to take off early from the office now and then. If you’ve been in a relationship for a while, the you will probably need to schedule it. Prioritize your relationship and spend quality time with your partner. It’s even better when you aren’t all stressed out.
  4. You won’t have to pretend everything is alright. You will be able to be honest with your partner. There is nothing worse than feeling like you can’t be yourself with the one you love. Stress tells you lies. It tells you that you aren’t enough. Then when you go home, you feel your partner won’t love you for the person you are.
  5. You will feel more present. When you are stressed out it is hard to concentrate and focus. This definitely effects the time you spend with your partner. You want to be present when you are with your partner. This shows that you are genuinely interested in the relationship. There is nothing worse than feeling like your partner isn’t listening to you when you are talking.
  6. You will stop setting unrealistic expectations. You can’t do everything, and you aren’t meant to do everything. You aren’t a robot. Your body needs to stop and recharge. If you aren’t realistic with yourself, then you are probably not realistic with others. What this means is you need to stop putting unrealistic expectations on your partner. This will only cause resentment in the relationship.
  7. You will have more time for your relationship. You may feel like you never have enough time. The truth is you are never running out of time. When you are stressed, your mind tricks you into thinking you are. You will start to prioritize your relationship again, and have fun with your partner. Instead of worrying about everything you haven’t done.
  8. You will have less negative self talk. This means you can practice self love. Stress plays tricks on the mind. It can make you think you are a failure in your relationship. When actually you are just stressed out. Don’t believe the lies between your ears. Come of up with a few simple affirmations that you can say about yourself and your relationship. For example: I will get through this, or we can do this. Make it short and sweet, and say it often.

Don’t let stress ruin your life or your relationship. One of the main reasons people feel so stressed out is because they play the comparison game. This never ends good and always leaves you feeling bad. What happens is you compare yourself to the top 10%. Which makes you feel like you never have enough. You always compare your relationship to relationships in the media. You know where the couples that are always happy and look perfect all the time. You know that isn’t realistic.

All relationships go through highs and lows. This is why reducing stress is important. It will help keep your mind in check. You will also have a more realistic mindset. Meaning you will be happier and less stressed out.
